What to Do After a Car Accident in South Florida

A car accident can disrupt your life in a matter of seconds. Between dealing with injuries, vehicle damage, and insurance adjusters, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But in times like these, what you need most isn’t just a lawyer—you need a counselor at law.

At Pezon Law, we believe in more than just filing claims and attending court dates. Our most important service is to guide you—to give you the clarity and counsel you need to make the right decisions about your case. You are the one who decides what you want out of your claim. Our job is to make sure you have all the information necessary to make that decision with confidence.

Here’s what we advise every client after a car accident in South Florida:

1. Your Safety Comes First

Before anything else, check to see if you or anyone else is injured. Call 911 immediately for medical help if needed. Florida law also requires you to remain at the scene. If it’s safe, move your vehicle out of traffic.

2. Call Law Enforcement

Even if it seems minor, always request a police officer. An accident report may be critical in determining fault and helping you later in the claims process. Tell the officer what happened, but remember—you don’t need to admit fault. It’s okay to say you’d like to speak with your attorney first.

3. Gather Evidence

If you’re able, take photos of the vehicles, the road conditions, and any visible injuries. Get names and contact information from the other driver and any witnesses. This early evidence can shape your entire case.

4. Seek Medical Attention Quickly

Don’t delay care. Even if you feel okay, many injuries take hours or days to surface. Under Florida’s no-fault laws, you have 14 days to seek medical care in order to qualify for PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage. Miss that window, and you could lose access to benefits you’re entitled to.

5. Contact Your Insurance—But Be Cautious

You may be required to notify your insurer promptly. But be careful what you say, especially in recorded statements. Insurance companies don’t represent your best interests—we do.

6. Talk to Pezon Law Before You Make Any Big Decisions

That’s where we come in. Our role is to advise you on what Florida law says about your case, what options you have, and what the risks and rewards of those options might be. We’re not here to pressure you—we’re here to counsel you, so you can choose the direction that’s best for your life and your recovery.

At Pezon Law, the difference is in how we treat our clients. You’re the boss. We’re the team that helps you navigate the pitfalls of litigation and insurance claims, and we do it with personal, one-on-one attention every step of the way.
